Capacity Building training Workshop [Pretoria, South Africa – December 1-3, 2015]

This initiative aim to give a tool and expertise to scientists that will allow them to provide citizens, communities, natural-resource managers, and policymakers with a clear knowledge of the status of their water resources, data on trends in water availability and use over recent decades, and an improved ability to forecast the availability of freshwater for future human, economic, and environmental uses.

Indeed, for example farmers in regions experiencing water stress or drought conditions can struggle to balance their crop portfolios. Periods of low precipitation often lead to increased, unsustainable reliance on ground water supplied irrigation. As a result, water management agencies place limits on the amount of water which can be obtained from groundwater, requiring farmers to reduce surface for more water-intensive crops or remove them from the portfolio entirely.

Real-time decisions must be made by the farmer to ensure viability of their farming operation and reduce the impacts associated with limited water resources. Evolutionary algorithms, coupled with accurate, flexible, realistic simulation tools, are ideal mechanisms to allow water department to assess scenarios with regard to multiple, competing objectives. Many simulation tools allow no access to the source code, and many optimization algorithms are now packaged as part of a suite of tools available to a user.

Within this IHP framework and with the support of the HOPE-Initiative, UNESCO conducts a wide range of short, intensive and highly specialized courses which aim at upgrading and refreshing the knowledge and skills of Technicians, Scientists, Engineers and mid-career professional.

On December 1-3, 2015, UNESCO with the partnership of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Water Research Commission South Africa (WRC) provided training on MODFLOW-2005. This Capacity Building training Workshop (Short Course) took place at WRC, Pretoria (South Africa) [For more information click here]
